Everyone knows the powerful Hercules, son of Jupiter and hero of a thousand adventures. Tivoli, the ancient Tibur, had Hercules as his God and protector. For this reason, the people of Tivoli decided in the 2nd century BC to build a large sanctuary and dedicate it to Hercules. A monumental construction, equipped with a temple where he can be honoured and a theatre to celebrate his feats. However, the building did not only have a religious function, because on its lower floor it had large rooms where intense economic activity took place. In fact, Hercules was also the guarantor of good business!
Over the centuries the Sanctuary of Hercules, with its large, covered spaces, has been witness and protagonist of all the historical phases the city has gone through. Let's enter the Via Tecta together and I will tell you about the shepherds who came here with their flocks and later about when this place hosted the Pope's arquebus factory, the paper mills and the electrical industry.
A mysterious place, with a fantastic view, it worth the visit!
