The Ryder Cup is a legendary team competition in golf that is steeped in tradition and considered one of the most prestigious events in Europe. This event, which is held every two years in a match play format, features teams from Europe and the United States. It was named in honor of Samuel Ryder, the founder of the English Professional Golf Association. The competition was established in 1927 as a biennial event, but has been held annually since 1979. The global popularity of golf and the participation of the top golfers from Europe make the Ryder Cup a one-of-a-kind event that serves to promote the sport, which boasts a worldwide player base of 65 million, making it the most widely played individual sport in the world. It is not only the most prestigious golf tournament, but also one of the most widely viewed and highly attended sports events globally, ranking behind only the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. The Ryder Cup is unique in that it is the only competition in which teams from Europe compete collectively. The event takes place every two years, alternating between venues in Europe and America.
