Nestled in the heart of Cave, a charming village surrounded by the chestnut woods of the Monti Prenestini, lies one of Lazio’s most captivating and unique cultural destinations: the Lorenzo Ferri Museum. The crown jewel of the Lorenzo Ferri Museum is undoubtedly the Monumental Nativity, displayed in the atmospheric underground spaces of the former Augustinian Convent in Cave’s historic center. Here, under ancient vaults and gentle lighting, a monumental nativity comes to life: nine plaster statues, sculpted between 1947 and 1948, each over 13 feet tall, portraying the Epiphany scene with unparalleled dramatic presence.

Originally created as part of a competition organized by the Pallottine Fathers to refresh the nativity of the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome, the statues depict Mary and Baby Jesus, Saint Joseph, the Three Wise Men, and their attendants — figures at once monumental and imbued with humanity. The grand scale interacts with light and space, transforming the nativity into a mysterious masterpiece of sacred art that captivates every visitor.

Located in Cave — often called the “City of Nativity Scenes” — Ferri’s Monumental Nativity is considered one of Italy’s most impressive permanent nativity art displays. It draws art lovers, families, and travelers seeking a unique and heartfelt Christmas experience every year.
